DSA Vocal Community,
The winter concert “Songs of Night” has been moved to Wednesday, December 12 at 7 pm for high school vocal students and Tuesday, December 4th at 7 pm for middle school vocal students.
This was a joint decision by DSA administrators and Ms. Quigley in order to maintain the high standards of excellence and achievement we expect from DSA vocal students and their ensembles in concert. If students have prior commitments on these dates they will not be held accountable or penalized with grades in any manner. The concert dates for the vocal department were set previous to the 2018-2019 school year and appointment of Ms. Quigley and transitioning of the program. With this being said, the fall concert dates and winter concert dates fell much closer together than they had in years previous and did not allow the time to present the polished performance and standard of excellence that is expected from and will be maintained within the program. The movement of the concert will also allow us to honor students’ fall break and alleviate the stress they may have felt toward concert preparation during that break.
In order to increase communication and clarify expectations for this semester, please read the following updates for the vocal department. The Vocal Handbook will be completed and posted on the website after the fall break. All changes, policies, and expectations within the handbook will be implemented second semester. Concert evaluations have been cancelled for this semester, but any student that has completed them can turn them in for extra credit toward their vocal grade. Finally, there seems to have been some miscommunication regarding my attendance at the VAMPS meeting on Tuesday, November 13th, and for that I apologize. VAMPS leadership did know that I would not be present for this meeting. In the future, my attendance at VAMPS meetings will be communicated out to the entire community prior to every meeting in a timely manner.
Please know that with any learning and developmental process there are bound to be opportunities for growth and reflection. I appreciate your patience and understanding as the whole process and changes within the vocal department and the school year unfold.
The changes within the department are an ongoing learning and growing process that we need to back as a community to positively support and reinforce. The main focus of the vocal department for the future is positivity. I would like to take a moment to thank all of you for your positivity with me in personal interactions, communication, and support and care of your students. Together, we will push the vocal department and its students to be the very best they can be.
In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I also want to state how thankful I am for the opportunity of teaching and learning alongside your vocal students and leading the vocal program. I am thankful everyday that I have the opportunity to work with such wonderfully talented students who will change the world for the better.
