Students are required to audition as Majors into the Vocal Music Department. Those accepted are placed into one of the following choirs: Pastiche, Bellissima, or Chorale which all meet daily for 90 minutes. Within that time period, students receive instruction in vocal technique, choral methods, sight-singing, music theory, music history, and solo performance techniques.
Major Choirs: In addition to choral activities, high school students are expected to take private voice lessons. MS students perform in frequent solo days during class, while HS students participate in studio recitals. HS students also have the opportunity to sing solos in quarterly Master Classes and Senior Recitals. All students are eligible to sing in music convocations scheduled throughout the semester during class.
As part of their major, students sing a variety of genres including classical, Broadway, jazz, pop, etc. HS students perform in an annual Pops Show each spring complete with set, costumes, lights, and choreography; they perform in solo & small group acts, as well as choral numbers. MS students perform in an annual Broadway revue featuring solo and choral numbers.
All students have the opportunity to work with local, state, and national guest artists in performance and/or in the classroom. Our choirs are nationally noted, and are frequent guest performers at the Colorado Music Educators’ Association Conference (CMEA). They have also toured Honolulu, New York, Miami, Puerto Rico, and San Francisco.
Elective offerings include the following auditioned choirs: Vocal Jazz Ensemble (VJE). Other non-auditioned electives include music theater and vocal skills class.
Our alumni go on to colleges, universities, and conservatories across the nation, including Eastman School of Music, NYU, Berklee College of Music, CalArts, San Francisco Conservatory, Oberlin Conservatory, Stanford and others.
