Evidence of Preplanning Student planned the piece carefully, made more than three sketches showing several different ideas and demonstrated evidence of research their sketches. Student shows evidence of preplanning in two to three sketches of different ideas. No extra research is shown. Student made two or more sketches but only one idea was explored. Student completed one very simple sketch of one idea. Student did not complete sketches or show evidence of research for the project.
Use of Art Elements and Principles Student demonstrates purposeful and intentional use of several art elements and principles of design.  Overall composition of work is very well thought out and dynamic. Several art elements are used in the project.  Composition is well thought out but lacks excitement or looks unintentional. Use of one or two art elements, and one example of principles of design.  Simple use of composition but not dynamic. Limited use of the art elements and principles. Simple composition resulting in an unexciting piece. Limited use of art elements or principles.  Composition is confused, unorganized and/or accidental.
Creativity/Originality Student explored several choices before selecting one and tried unusual combinations.  Completed work is unusual and demonstrates new idea. The student tried a couple of ideas before selecting one.  Completed piece is unique. The student tried an idea, but lacked originality.  Completed piece is similar to examples of other artists work.

 

The student fulfills the assignment, but gave no evidence of trying anything unusual or new.

 

The student showed no evidence of original thought. Obvious copy of another artists work.

 

Use of Personal Voice Student successfully expressed a personal idea, emotion or experience.  The finished piece has a clear message or meaning. Student made an attempt to express a personal idea, emotion or experience but message is unclear to viewer. Student used common symbols or trite images to create feeling in the piece, not their own voice. Student created an artwork that has little meaning for the viewer beyond decoration. Student made no effort to express a personal viewpoint or meaning of any kind.
Craftsmanship/Skill Student demonstrates a high level of attention to the finish and presentation of the project. Student required very little outside assistance to complete their work. With a little more effort, the work could be outstanding; but it lacks the finishing touches to make it a highly crafted piece.

 

The student shows average craftsmanship and finish. Student did not follow instruction to improve the presentation. The student shows below average craftsmanship. Presentation is rough, and looks rushed. The student showed poor craftsmanship. Piece appears unfinished.
Grading Scale

A = 90-100

B = 80 – 89

C = 70 – 79

D = 60-69

F = below 60
