Senior Trip Information

Below, please find the itinerary for the 2017 Senior Trip:

Below, please find the itinerary for our Chicago trip.  It is designed to provide structure but will also leave time for shopping and sightseeing.  We will be staying at the historic Palmer House Hilton Hotel in the Chicago Loop.  Our hotel is central to concert and museum venues, two blocks from Millennium Park and Lake Michigan, The Art Institute of Chicago, and a 15-minute walk to the Chicago Lyric Opera House.   The Palmer House is a 4-star hotel, so students should dress appropriately and conduct themselves professionally at all times.  For attendance at concerts, please avoid denim, t-shirts, or other casual dress.  Students may dress more casually for our trips to museums and while shopping.

Please understand that the weather in Chicago in March can be bitterly cold.  Be sure to follow weather forecasts closely and be sure to bring warm clothes for walking outdoors.  Some of our venues are about a mile away from the hotel, so bring appropriate walking shoes.  Umbrellas are also advisable.

I have been informed by Palmer House staff that use of the swimming pool is complimentary, so students may bring swimwear if they would like to swim.  The workout facility is available for students, as well.  Students may also bring homework, cards, board games, and other time-fillers for use in the hotel.  Students are welcome to congregate in the lobby area, but please remember that the lobby is a quiet public space.

No cell phone usage is permitted in any of the concert venues or in museums.  Limited use of cell phones is allowed while we’re walking; however, students are expected to be aware of their surroundings at all times and should be taking in the sights of the city rather than chatting or texting.  Please be aware of cell phone restrictions in restaurants.

Limited photography is allowed in the Art Institute, but no flash photography is permitted.  Please be aware that there will be artists working in the Art Institute, so remain quiet and respectful of their spaces.  Generally, there is tape on the floor indicating areas that are off limits. You are encouraged to watch them work. Airline transportation, tickets to the Chicago Lyric Opera, the Chicago Symphony, the Art Institute of Chicago, and other music venues and museums will be financed through the Piano Department Activity Fund and through your personal contributions.  Students will be responsible to purchase breakfasts and snacks.  Please estimate $12 each day for breakfast.  We will stop at a convenience store for snacks, and there are inexpensive food venues in both airports and close to our hotel.  There is a Target store across the street from the Palmer House, and there are inexpensive coffee shops, fast food restaurants, and bakery offerings close by.  CVS Pharmacy is across the street from the hotel.  Freshii is a healthy and inexpensive restaurant venue located on the ground floor of the hotel.
