Audition Information

The Piano Major at DSA is designed to provide talented students with educational and performance opportunities that will supplement their private piano study.  It is expected that private teachers will be a visible, positive, and integral part of this process.  While at DSA, students participate in Music Theory and Music History classes and will pursue rigorous academic studies.  DSA is a top-rated school in the state of Colorado, and students are expected to learn, practice, and work accordingly.  That having been said, DSA is a nurturing environment, and students will benefit from a diverse, enjoyable, and exciting experience from a group of the finest teachers in any school anywhere.

The DSA Piano Major is not a beginner’s program. All auditioning students are expected to have had successful experience as performers before they audition at DSA.  Students auditioning at the middle school level should be able to perform the Sonatinas of Clementi or Kuhlau, or the Two-Part Inventions of J.S. Bach.  Students auditioning at the high school level should be able to perform the easier sonatas of Beethoven, Haydn, or Mozart, or the Songs Without Words of Mendelssohn.

There are two major components:

1.  The student will perform FROM MEMORY two contrasting selections. The selections can include music from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, or 20th Century Periods, and can also include pieces from the Jazz, Broadway Musical, or pop repertoire.  (90%)

2.  The student will perform a set of major and minor scales, hands together, at a rate of speed appropriate for the student’s age.  The student must perform the major and the three forms (natural, harmonic, and melodic) of the minor scales in any key of his/her choice.  6th Graders perform scales hands together in two octaves, and 7th-12th Graders perform scales hands together in four octaves.  (10%)

3.  No specific audition times are offered.  MS students should arrive at 9:00 a.m. on the designated audition day, and HS student should arrive at 1:00 p.m. on the designated audition day.  You will be assigned your audition time when you arrive.  Please plan to block out the entire morning or afternoon for this process.

Students must provide one copy of music for the judges.  Copyrighted material must not be photocopied.

No portfolio is required.  Students are encouraged to bring a resume of past performances, and should be prepared to discuss other accomplishments.

Auditions for the 2017-2018

A 4 step process

Step 1 – the online audition application

The online application will open on October 10, 2016 and close at NOON on November 18, 2016.  At any point during this online audition application window, you must apply online.

Note – Incoming 7th graders will audition for the waitlist only

Step 2 – the mandatory pre-audition meetings

A parent or an adult parent designee for the applicant must be in attendance at the pre-audition meeting in order to move ahead in the audition process.  We allow another adult to stand in the place of the parent in case of emergencies/vacations/work/etc.  But someone must be at this meeting to represent the student and get the audition time at the end of the meeting.  The student applicant does not HAVE to attend the meeting but is highly encouraged to do so.

Our pre-audition meeting is at 6:00 pm on Monday, Nov. 28, located in the Library.

Step 3 – the district school of choice form

You must fill out the DPS School of Choice Form.  This information and form can be found on the admissions page:

Step 4 – the audition

You will receive your audition date and time at our pre-audition meetings on Monday, Nov. 28, from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m..  You do not pick the audition date or time.  It is chosen for you.  The vast majority of our applicants will only be assigned one day.  Please keep all dates/times open on your calendar.  You will find out at our preaudition meeting which of the audition dates you will actually need.  All call back details will be explained at the pre-audition meetings.  The dates are not negotiable.

The Piano department will hold auditions on January 14, 2017.

If your student needs accommodations for the audition, as written in a 504 or IEP, please provide a copy of the 504 or IEP to Assistant Principal Aspen Miles ONE WEEK before your student’s audition date.
