Auditions for the 2017-2018
A 4 step process
Step 1 – the online audition application
The online application will open on October 10, 2016 and close at NOON on November 18, 2016. At any point during this online audition application window, you must apply online.
Note – Incoming 7th graders will audition for the waitlist only
Step 2 – the mandatory pre-audition meetings
A parent or an adult parent designee for the applicant must be in attendance at the pre-audition meeting in order to move ahead in the audition process. We allow another adult to stand in the place of the parent in case of emergencies/vacations/work/etc. But someone must be at this meeting to represent the student and get the audition time at the end of the meeting. The student applicant does not HAVE to attend the meeting but is highly encouraged to do so.
Our preaudition meeting is at 6:00 pm on November 30th located in the Concert Hall followed by a short free concert!
Step 3 – the district school of choice form
You must fill out the DPS School of Choice Form. This information and form can be found on the admissions page: http://dsa.dpsk12.org/auditions/
Step 4 – the audition
You will receive your audition date and time at our pre-audition meetings on November 30th. You do not pick the audition date or time. It is chosen for you because its based on instrumentation. The vast majority of our applicants will only be assigned one day. Please keep all dates/times open on your calendar. You will find out at our preaudition meeting which of the audition dates you will actually need. The dates are not negotiable.
The Department of Band will hold auditions on January 7 (all day), 10 (after 3pm) and 14 (AM mostly, maybe PM).
If your student needs accommodations for the audition, as written in a 504 or IEP, please provide a copy of the 504 or IEP to Assistant Principal Aspen Miles ONE WEEK before your student’s audition date.
In order to be eligible for audition into the Bands Department of the Denver School of the Arts students must first submit a school application online. Look at this site for more information: http://dsa.dpsk12.org/auditions/ The student and a guardian must then attend a mandatory meeting on November 30th at 6pm in the Concert Hall of the school. At this meeting we will talk about the process and what students are expected to know as they audition for a position in the bands area. Specific information on how to prepare for the audition will be discussed, what to expect as a student at Denver School of the Arts and January audition times will be given out. We will also answer specific questions. If there are any questions at all about the application/audition process parents are encouraged to call the school to inquire.
A student will not receive an audition slot without first submitting an online application before the deadline and attending the mandatory meeting.
All parents of students auditioning are reminded that acceptance to the school is not solely based on the audition performance. Other factors such as grade level population and large group instrumentation requirements may be considered.
Included below is a sheet that has specific audition information. Also below is the form we use to judge student’s performances during the audition to give you an idea exactly what the judges are looking for.
